Breast Implant Removal in Lone Tree, CO

Whether you’re experiencing complications, lifestyle changes, or simply ready for a new chapter, Dr. Tanya Atagi provides safe, personalized breast implant removal with options for natural restoration. As one of the few female board-certified plastic surgeons in the Denver area, she understands the unique considerations that bring patients to this decision.

Why Women Choose Breast Implant Removal

The decision to remove breast implants is deeply personal and varies for each patient. Some women experience physical symptoms like capsular contracture, implant rupture, or discomfort that affects daily activities. Others find their lifestyle has changed, perhaps desiring a different breast size or feel for sports, career, or personal comfort. Breast implant illness (BII), while not officially recognized as a medical diagnosis, describes a collection of symptoms that some women report experiencing with their implants. Many patients seek removal after pregnancy and breastfeeding have changed their body, or simply because their aesthetic preferences have evolved over time. Whatever brings you to consider explant surgery, your reasons are valid and deserve careful consideration with an experienced surgeon who listens to your concerns.

Your Options After Implant Removal

Natural Restoration:

Many women choose to embrace their natural breast shape after removal. Dr. Atagi can discuss realistic expectations for how your breasts may look based on your original anatomy, implant history, and skin quality. Some patients are pleasantly surprised by their natural contours.

Breast Lift Addition:

If removal leaves excess skin or sagging, a breast lift can restore a more youthful, elevated breast position. This combination procedure addresses both implant removal and reshaping of the natural breast tissue for optimal results.

Fat Transfer Enhancement:

For patients wanting some volume restoration without implants, fat transfer uses your own tissue harvested from areas like the abdomen or thighs. This natural approach provides modest enhancement while maintaining a completely natural feel.

What Breast Implant Removal Involves

Consultation

Dr. Atagi evaluates your implant history, current symptoms, and goals to determine the right surgical approach for your situation.

Treatment

Breast implant removal, medically known as explantation, involves surgically removing your current implants and, in some cases, the surrounding scar tissue capsule. Depending on your case, Dr. Atagi may perform a full capsulectomy, removing the implant and capsule tissue, when medically appropriate. While this approach aims to minimize the risk of leaving behind any implant material or problematic scar tissue, there’s no guarantee the implant and capsule can be removed as one fully intact unit in every case. Depending on your specific situation, the procedure may be performed under general anesthesia in the operating room, or in select cases, implant-only removal can be done in-office under local anesthesia, an option many patients are choosing. The procedure usually takes 1.5 to three hours, depending on the complexity of your case.

Aftercare

During the first week, you’ll be encouraged to stay active with normal daily tasks like washing your hair and face, rather than resting completely. The main focus is avoiding activities that raise your heart rate or blood pressure. You’ll wear a special supportive garment and have follow-up appointments to monitor healing. Some discomfort and swelling are normal and well-managed with prescribed pain medication. Starting at two weeks, you can gradually resume your usual activities without a specific weight restriction for this procedure.

Results

Most patients gradually resume full activity, including exercise, starting around two weeks, with complete clearance typically by four to six weeks. Your final breast shape continues to settle over several months as swelling completely resolves and tissues adapt to their new state.

Whether you need a breast lift after implant removal depends on your skin elasticity, original breast size, and implant history. Some patients have excellent skin recoil and are happy with their natural shape, while others benefit from a lift to address excess skin and restore breast position. Dr. Atagi will assess your anatomy during consultation to recommend the best approach.

Yes, breast implant replacement is an alternative to complete removal. This option works well for patients who want to maintain breast volume but need newer implants due to age, complications, or size preferences. Dr. Atagi can discuss whether replacement or removal better suits your goals during your consultation.

A full capsulectomy is a surgical technique where the implant and surrounding scar tissue capsule are removed together. While the goal is often to remove them as one intact unit, this can't always be guaranteed. This method aims to minimize the risk of leaving behind implant material or problematic capsule tissue and is often preferred when medically appropriate, especially for patients concerned about breast implant illness.

It's important to be up and walking the day of your procedure. Minimize activities that raise your blood pressure or heart rate, including sexual activity, for the first 2 weeks to reduce bleeding risk. After 2 weeks, you can gradually resume your usual exercise and activities without restriction.

Breast appearance after implant removal depends on your original anatomy, how long you had implants, and skin elasticity. Some women are pleasantly surprised by their natural shape, while others may have excess skin that benefits from a breast lift. Factors like implant size, placement duration, pregnancy history, and age all influence final results. A consultation with Dr. Atagi can provide realistic expectations based on your specific situation.
