A person is considered to be constipated if they have three or fewer bowel movements in a week or if they do have a bowel movement they are hard, dry or painful. Depending on how often a bowel movement normally occurs will determine what is considered to be &#8220;infrequent&#8221; for each individual patient.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Causes of Constipation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Constipation is the result of various conditions and may be caused by some of the following:<\/p>\n<ul data-rte-list=\"default\">\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">An insufficient amount of fluid consumption<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">A diet that does not contain enough fiber<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Irritable bowel syndrome<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Pregnancy<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Painful anal conditions<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Medication<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Hormonal imbalance<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Overuse of laxatives<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Disease<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Dehydration<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Damage to the spinal cord<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Suppressing the urge to have a bowel movement<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Lack of exercise<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Medical condition<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Constipation is not usually a serious condition, but it can lead to complications such as hemorrhoids, anal fissures, fecal impaction or rectal prolapse. It is important to seek prompt medical attention for persistent constipation.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Treatment of Constipation<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"white-space: pre-wrap;\">Most cases of constipation are temporary and can be resolved through changes in diet and fluid consumption or increasing physical activity.
